We offer five scholarships and the first three are dance educators I have studied with and the last two are special people who have affected how I teach and live my life as an educator.
Jimmy Slyde Scholar
This scholarship was created to honor Tap Master Dr. Jimmy Slyde and recipients receive a full scholarship in tap for the school year, September to May. Recipients must have the qualities of Dr. Slyde: gentle, thoughtful, hard working, excellent performance qualities, respectfulness and appreciation of others, and a clear gift for tap and musicality. Past recipients include Megan Scarbath (2008) and Emma Cooley (2009).
LaVaughn Robinson Scholar
This scholarship was created to honor Tap Master LaVaughn Robinson and recipients receive a full scholarship in tap for the school year, September to May. Recipients must have the qualities of Mr. Robinson: a calm nature, great work ethic, uncanny clarity and musicality, and a gentle smile they share with all in the class room and out. Past recipients include Faith Schanck (2008) and Summer Blachowicz (2010).
Gus Giordano Scholar
This scholarship was created to honor Jazz Dance Innovator/Master Teacher/Choreographer/Company Director/Jazz Dance World Congress Creator Gus Giordano. As a former assistant to Gus when he visited Maryland, I got to know his technique more clearly, but even more, assimilate his value system as a person and educator. Recipients receive 50% of tuition for jazz and ballet classes for the school year, September to May. Recipients must have a strong belief in God, in doing what is right when it is uncomfortable, and equal abilities in ballet and jazz. Past recipients have included Michelle Yi (2008) and Jen Landry (2009).
Brian Morse Scholar
This new scholarship was created to celebrate the life of my close friend, Theodore “Brian” Morse who was an avid singer, musician, thespian, and sports fanatic. It is meant to meet the needs of a male student who has many interests, great focus on them, and not a lot of time to waste! Recipients will receive 3 hours of free instruction per week in their areas of study for the school year, September to May. Past recipient is Kevin Truitt (2009).
Bruce Smith Scholar
This new scholarship was created to honor my favorite teacher and historian. He’s a man of great passion for all things good: dance, music, theatre, history, his family, and his faith. It is meant for a student with a great knowledge of dance history that they share freely with others. Recipients will receive an hour of free instruction in their area of study for the school year, September to May.
